Who is Required to have Health Insurance at College Park?
All undergraduate students registered in 6 or more credit hours at College Park.
All graduate students registered full-time (at least 48 units for the semester or 36 units for a 12-week term) at College Park are required to have health insurance. Graduate students can learn more information about the health insurance policy, the enrollment / waiver process, and graduate student exemptions by visiting the Graduate School’s Health Insurance Information webpage.
Note: Students who hold a graduate assistantship have an additional option to enroll in the State of Maryland Insurance Plan. If the State of MD plan is chosen, then a SHIP waiver will be required. Graduate Assistants can learn more information here.
Mandatory Enrollment and Waiver Process (Begins December 15, 2023)
Undergraduate students registered in 6 or more credits must enroll in SHIP or waive out of SHIP.
Graduate students registered full-time (48 units) must enroll in SHIP or waive out of SHIP.
- When enrolling in SHIP, your UMD student account will be charged.
- When waiving out of SHIP, you must furnish documentation of comparable coverage.
Newly appointed graduate assistants can submit their graduate assistantship offer letter.

Voluntary Enrollment Process
Certain student and scholar groups are exempt from the mandatory enrollment and waiver process. If exempt, you may be eligible to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) using the Voluntary Enrollment Process.
